CALEF is a research consortium, a non-profit organization, founded in 1998 by ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), Calzoni SpA, Costamasnaga SpA, Ettore Zanon SpA and Rodriquez Cantieri Navali (RCN) SpA. The purpose of the Consortium is to conduct research in the field of welding, cutting and surface treatment of metallic materials, for specific applications in shipbuilding and railway sectors, using the technologies of laser and electron beam (EB). Activities and research projects are also aimed at promoting and transferring the knowledge and skills acquired to the Italian industrial system, with particularly to SMEs.
Over the years the Consortium's activities have been extended to the general field of advanced materials and engineering processes and methods of industrial production with application purposes in the field of transport. This became possible when some of the original partners (Calzoni, Costamasnaga, Zanon and RCN) left the Consortium which then welcomed new partners with knowledge and skills in various specialized fields ranging from basic research, higher education and professional training (ENEA, Polytechnic of Bari, University of Calabria, University of Salerno, the Italian Institute of Welding- Ente morale) to the development of laser industrial equipment (El.En. S.p.A, Lasit S.p.A, TTM Laser S.p.A) and industrial production in the aviation industry (Alenia Aermacchi S.p.A, APR S.r.l.) and the automotive industry (FCA Italy SpA, Fiat Research Centre S.C.p.A) and advanced energy system (Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo-SRS S.r.l)).
Research and development activities of the Consortium are conducted in laboratories of the partners.
